Dean of Math
Position Overview
The Dean of Math is an instructional leader responsible for driving excellence in mathematics instruction across grades K–8. This role combines high-impact instructional coaching with full ownership of math curriculum, systems, and student achievement outcomes.
The Dean of Math partners with teachers to strengthen instructional practices, increase student engagement, and ensure measurable gains in math achievement. In addition to coaching and professional learning, this role is responsible for ensuring consistency, rigor, and alignment in mathematics instruction across the school.
The ideal candidate demonstrates deep content expertise in mathematics, strong leadership and facilitation skills, and a commitment to equitable outcomes for all scholars.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership & Teacher Development
- Lead and manage individualized coaching cycles (goal setting, co-planning, modeling, observation, feedback, and reflection)
- Conduct frequent classroom observations and provide clear, actionable feedback
- Model high-quality, standards-aligned math instruction across K–8 classrooms
- Develop teacher capacity in mathematical discourse, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving
- Support differentiation to meet the needs of diverse learners
- Mentor new teachers and cultivate teacher leadership
Curriculum & Standards Ownership
- Ensure consistent, high-quality implementation of the K–8 math curriculum
- Drive vertical alignment across grade levels to ensure coherent skill progression
- Establish clear expectations for rigor, discourse, and problem-solving in math instruction
- Develop and refine curriculum resources, unit plans, and assessments
- Support effective integration of technology to enhance math learning
Data-Driven Instruction & Accountability
- Lead schoolwide math data cycles, including analysis of formative, interim, and summative assessments
- Set and monitor progress toward math achievement goals
- Oversee and strengthen MTSS/RTI systems for math intervention
- Ensure effective reteach plans and targeted interventions are implemented
- Hold teams accountable for student progress and instructional adjustments
Professional Development & Team Leadership
- Design and deliver high-impact, math-focused professional learning
- Lead grade-level and content team meetings focused on instructional improvement

Provide training in areas such as:
- Mathematical practices and reasoning
- Productive struggle and student discourse
- Culturally responsive math instruction
- Small-group instruction and intervention
- Building number sense and foundational skills in early grades
- Serve as a key member of the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT)
Student Achievement & Equity
- Promote equitable instructional practices and high expectations for all scholars
- Collaborate with Special Education and ENL teams to ensure access to grade-level content
- Monitor subgroup performance and address achievement gaps
- Ensure all students are supported in mastering rigorous mathematical content
Family & Community Engagement
- Lead and support math-focused family engagement initiatives (e.g., Math Night)
- Develop resources to help families support math learning at home
- Partner with families to reinforce a positive math mindset and culture
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Education, or related field
- Valid teaching certification (Elementary and/or Middle School Mathematics)
- Minimum of 5 years of successful K–8 math teaching experience
- Demonstrated success in improving student achievement
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or Educational Leadership
- Prior experience in instructional coaching, teacher leadership, or school leadership
- Experience facilitating professional development for adults
- Experience with or knowledge of Illustrative Math or similar standards-aligned curricula
